Moving on After Sexual Assault

Sexual assault is one of the most traumatic experiences anyone can go through, leaving survivors confused, anxious, and unsure where to turn for help. Sadly, many survivors of sexual assault keep the incident a secret for reasons that may include shame, guilt, and fear that no one will believe them or that somehow the assault was their fault. It’s not easy for survivors to cope and move on with their lives due to emotional, psychological, and physical challenges. Here are long term-effects many sexual assault survivors face and how they can get help.

Understanding The Life-Long Challenges of Sexual Assualt Survivors

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetime — and the consequences are devasting. Some of the most common life-long issues sexual assault survivors face are:

Psychological Effects

  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) - flashbacks, nightmares, and uncontrollable thoughts and anxiety.
  • Depression - sadness, feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed.
  • Dissociation - unable to focus on work or school, avoiding social activities.

Some sexual assault survivors can also be burdened with having suicidal thoughts or attempts. If you or a loved one is struggling with thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Emotional Effects

  • Untrusting of others
  • Feelings of anger and loss of control
  • Feeling vulnerable
  • Fear and helplessness
  • Self-blame and guilt

Physical Effects

  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Sexual dysfunction
