Self-Care is an Integral Part of Healing

Sexual assault is a traumatic experience that can have a lasting impact on survivors. The healing process can be difficult and often requires professional help. However, there are things that survivors can do to help during healing and recovery. Here are some tips on how to practice self-care.

Five ways To Practice Self-Care

  1. Get enough sleep: Getting a good night's sleep is vital for your physical and mental health. If you're having trouble sleeping, there are a few things you can try to help you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. These include establishing a regular sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, and creating a relaxing bedtime routine.
  2. Eat nutritious foods: Eating healthy foods helps your body heal and provides you with the energy you need to get through the day. If you're unsure where to start, try incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet.
  3. Exercise: Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting and pain-relieving benefits. Taking a brisk walk, going for a run, or participating in another type of physical activity can help you to reduce stress, improve your sleep, and increase your overall sense of well-being.
  4. Spend time with supportive people: Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people is an integral part of the healing process. These people can provide you with love, comfort, and understanding. They can also offer practical help and assistance as you recover from the trauma of sexual assault.
  5. Participate in activities that you enjoy: Doing things that make you happy can help to lift your mood and improve your overall sense of well-being. Find activities that bring you joy and make them a part of your routine. Examples include listening to music, reading, spending time outdoors, and watching your favorite movies.

With time and support, you can find the self-care activities that work best for you and begin to heal from the wounds of sexual assault.
